Title: The Near-Sighted Builder

Location : San Juanico

Year : 2017

We anchored in the sheltered waters of San Juanico Bay in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. After helping a number of other people at the ranchito (small ranch) with reading glasses we spoke to one guy who was badly near-sighted but did not have any spectacles. When attempting to test his eye-sight he was not able to see the top letter (7cm high) on the "Tumbling E chart" until he was less than 2 metres from it. Normally a "Tumbling E chart" is viewed at a distance of 6 metres. Basically anything further away for the guy than a metre was a blur.

After extensive testing we finally were able to provide him with a pair of spectacles that restored his distance vision - Minus 4.50 in one eye and Minus 4.75 in the other, as well as a pair of sunglass fitovers. He was in his mid-40's and for many years his distance vision had been so poor that he was not able to anything clearly more than a couple of metres away from him. His job at the ranchito was building maintenance and construction and, considering the quality of his vision, his work was quite a reasonable standard. He said on the weekend he would be returning home and for the first time he will be able to see his children play.
